4. Separating Salt and Sand
Hypothesis
A mixture of sand and salt can be separated using filtration and evaporation.
Method
3 tsp salt, 3 tsp sand, and 150ml water were mixed in a beaker.
A cone of filter paper was placed in a funnel and held over a small pan, and the water mixture was poured through it. The funnel was held until all the sand had left the beaker, and the filter paper had stopped dripping.
The paper was allowed to dry.
While the paper was drying, the filtrate was gently heated in the pan until all the water had evaporated.

Results
The sand collected in the filter paper.
The salt was left in the pan once the water had evaporated.
Conclusion
A mixture of sand and salt can be separated.
When the mixture was added to water, the sand could be separated from the salt and water by filtration, and the salt then separated from the water by evaporation.
The water was not collected, and it evaporated into the atmosphere.
