2. Diffusion of Food Coloring in Water

Goal

To observe the impact of temperature on diffusion rate.

Method

A glass was filled with cool water, and a second glass with warm water.

A few drops of food coloring were added to each glass and the mixtures observed.

The glasses were set aside for two hours and periodically observed during this time.

Results

When first added, the food coloring started moving through the water forming swirling patterns (see photo).

The food coloring in the warmer water moved more rapidly than that in the cooler water.

After 60 min, the food coloring had fully mixed with the warmer water.

After 90 min, the food coloring had fully mixed with the cooler water.

Conclusion

The food coloring diffused through the water. Diffusion occurred more rapidly in the warmer water.
